Bursaries for Roman sexualities conference

The Reception of Rome and the Construction of Western Homosexual
Identities:
an international conference, Durham University, 16th-18th April 2012.

Confirmed speakers include: Matthew Fox (Glasgow),  Ralph J. Hexter
(University of California, Davis), Caroline Vout (Cambridge), Craig
Williams (Brooklyn, CUNY), Gregory Woods (Nottingham Trent).

A limited number of bursaries, generously funded by the British Academy,
are available to graduate students enrolled on research degrees who wish
to attend the conference. These bursaries will cover accommodation only
for the duration of the conference (16th-18th April). Applicants should
send an email by February 29th 2012 to jennifer.ingleheart@durham.ac.uk
stating their reasons for wishing to attend the conference as well as
other funding options that are open to them. Priority will be given to
those applicants who have had papers accepted for delivery at the
conference, and the decision of the organising committee is final and
will be communicated via email by March 2nd 2012.

Scholarships for postgraduates in France

The Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon is offering Masters scholarships for international students in the sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences.

Conditions for application

   * The scholarships are available for applicants to both M1 (first year of two-year Masters degree) and M2 (second year) programmes.

   * There is a maximum age limit of 26 at the closing date for application(candidates in 2012 must have been born on or after 6th February 1986).

   * The scholarships are open to non-French nationals

   * Previous qualifications:

- Candidates for admission to the first year of the Masters programme (M1)must hold or be about to obtain a Licence degree (equivalent to 180 EuropeanECTS credits), or a qualification of an equivalent level recognized by the ENS de Lyon.

- Candidates for admission to the second year of the Masters programme (M2)must have or be about to have successfully carried out studies to Master 1level (equivalent to 240 European ECTS credits), or hold or be about to obtain a qualification of an equivalent level recognized by the ENS de Lyon(example: MPhil).

   * Type of enrolment: Full-time. Students selected for the M2 level willnot be eligible for periods of study or internships abroad during their timeat the ENS de Lyon.

   * Financial support: a payment of 1,000 Euros per month for twelve months.

   * Duration of the scholarships:

- M2: twelve months;
- M1: twelve months, renewable for a further twelve months at M2 level
provided the student fulfils the necessary academic criteria.

   * Number of scholarships:

- 10 in the sciences;
- 10 in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Language skills

Candidates in the arts, humanities and social sciences:

Sufficient competence in French to be able to successfully undertake thecourse being applied for. The C1 level is recommended.  Candidates mustprovide proof of their level of competence in French.

Postgraduate grants in Royal Holloway

The Department of Classics and Philosophy is pleased to announce five

Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean Project

Cultures of Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean: CRASIS Annual Meeting, University of Groningen, 9-10 February 2012

CRASIS – the Groningen institute for the study of Cultures, Religions and Societies of the Graeco-Roman world – is pleased to present the programme of our first Annual Meeting on Cultures of Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean, to be held on 9 and 10 February 2012. The Annual
Meeting consists of a conference day (9 Feb, programme below) and a Masterclass for advanced MA and PhD students (10 Feb).

Professor Greg Woolf (St.Andrews) will chair the Masterclass and deliver the CRASIS Annual Lecture:
‘The Origins of Religious Pluralism in the Roman World and Beyond’.

In recent years, concepts such as Social Network Analysis and connectivity have made their way into the Humanities. The purpose of the Annual Meeting is to apply these notions  to the study of cultures, religions and societes of Antiquity. A broad understanding of’networks’ allows for a wide array of topics to be analyzed from this perspective: trade and various forms of exchange of goodsbetween cities and regions, literary networks, religious interaction and the spread of religious
ideas, and the organisation of religious groups in society.

All are warmly invited to attend the Annual Meeting or Annual Lecture. For the Annual Meeting, please register beforehand with Birgit van der Lans (b.e.a.l.van.der.lans@rug.nl). Acropolis for rent!

You probably already heard about the Russian magnate who offered to buy the temple of Zeus at Agrigento in Sicily. The Greek government realised this unique opportunity and decided to offer its archaeological sites for rent. First and foremost, the Acropolis will turn into a film studio for no more than 1600 euros per day. The ministry of culture makes available 117 archaeological sites, among which are Knossos, Faistos and Lindos. The person who will rent these places will have the opportunity to use them in photos, movies or advertisements. So, if you would like to take pictures of the Acropolis or the monuments on its slopes, the price will be 1000 euros per day. If you want to make a movie in the same area, you would have to pay 1600 euros per day. Of course, the ones who applauded the Greek government’s move were the Germans. According to the German newspaper, Bild, the Greeks should offer all of their archaeological sites for rent, so that the state fills up its coffers. On the other hand, the Greeks cannot be more humiliated for the loss of their sovereignty and its symbols.

Applicants who want to apply for an Early Career Fellowship through the Department of Classics and Ancient History will receive assistance in the form of feedback on individual draft applications, especially the project proposal. For this assistance, applicants need to contact Johannes Haubold (j.h.haubold@dur.ac.uk), providing the following information, in good time for an internal submission deadline of 30 January 2012:
 
(a)   A current Curriculum Vitae
(b)   A detailed account of the proposed research, (2 pages of A4, Times New Roman 12 pt). This should include aims, objectives, methodology and publication plans. The methodology should be clear and comprehensible to a non-expert. Bibliographic references should be included in full.
(c)    An abstract of the proposal in non-technical terms so as to be easily comprehensible to a non-expert.
(d)    Details of research being undertaken in the department/centre at Durham which is relevant to your proposal.
 
Applications will then undergo a process of scrutiny by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities which provides the matching funding. Applicants will be informed whether their application can be supported by Durham by Thursday 9 February, allowing plenty of time for further polishing of the application to meet the Leverhulme Trust deadline of 4pm on 8 March 2012. The Trust will report results, by letter, by the end of May 2012.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships at Reading

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships, 2012

The Department of Classics at the University of Reading invites applications for this fellowship from qualified early career scholars in all areas of classical studies.  The application requires the support of a member of the Department willing to act as a mentor; the fellowship will be based in the Department at Reading.

For the purpose of this application, early career scholars are those who have a doctorate and who have had their viva not more than 5 years from the official closing date (therefore, doctoral scholars who have had their viva before 8 March 2007 are not eligible).  Fellowships are now tenable for 36 months only; fellowships of 24 months are no longer offered by the Leverhulme Trust.

The Trust contributes 50% of each Fellow’s total salary costs up to a maximum of £23,000 per annum.  It also provides up to £6,000 towards the costs of research eligible expenses.  The University will provide the remainder of the salary costs for three years.  In the past, the University has supported a number of applications and had a number of successes.

The Department will receive applications and forward a recommendation to the School of Humanities, which will consider applications from Classics and other departments.  Applicants will be informed as soon as possible whether the School/University is prepared to support their applications.
