Balliol College seeks to elect a suitably qualified applicant to a Tutorial Fellowship in Latin Literature, to be held in conjunction with a Titular CUFLecturership in the Faculty of Classics of Oxford University.The appointment will begin from October 1st 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter. The Fellow will be responsible, jointly with the Fellows in Greek Literature, Ancient History and Philosophy, for the organisation of college teaching in Classics and its Joint Schools with Modern Languages and Oriental Studies; and will teach tutorials and classes in Greek and Latin literature for all undergraduate years. He/she will also be expected to carry out advanced research, and to contribute to lecturing, examining and graduate supervision for the Faculty of Classics. The post is permanent, subject to satisfactory completion of a review of the initial five-year period of office; this review is intended to be a constructive one, is non-competitive, and most postholders in Oxford complete it satisfactorily.

Benefits: the salary for the post will be £42,733 to £57,431 per annum of the University’s new pay and grading structure. Substantial housing

We warmly welcome contributions from students as well as from established researchers and practitioners. Themes could include digital text, linguistics technology, imaging and visualization, linked data, open access, geographic analysis, serious gaming and any other digital or quantitative methods. While we welcome high-quality application papers discussing individual projects, the series also hopes to accommodate broader theoretical consideration of the use of digital technology in Classical studies. The content should be of interest both to classicists, ancient historians or archaeologists, and to information scientists or digital humanists, and have an academic research agenda relevant to at least one of those fields.

The seminars will run on Friday afternoons (16:30-18:00) from June to mid-July in Senate House, London, hosted by the Institute of Classical Studies (ending early this year to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games). In previous years collected papers from the seminars have been published in a special issue of Digital Medievalist; a printed volume from Ashgate Press; a BICS supplement (in production). The last few years’ papers have been released as audio podcasts. We have had expressions of interest in further print volumes from more than one publisher.

There is a budget to assist with travel to London (usually from within the UK, but we have occasionally been able to assist international presenters to attend, so please enquire).

Cogut Center for the Humanities and History Department

The Cogut Center and Department of History at Brown University invite
applications for a two-year Mellon post-doctoral fellowship in the Global
History of Medicine. The field is defined as any sub-set of the history of
medicine that explores connections or interactions in more than one region,
or that compares the history of medicine between two or more regions.
Applicants must have received their degrees from institutions other than
Brown within the last five (5) years. The successful candidate must show
exceptional scholarly promise and will be expected to teach one course a
semester to complement courses in the history of medicine already offered at
the university (these will be listed by the History Department and
cross-listed with the Cogut Center).

The Fellow will also be affiliated with the Cogut Center, where s/he will
participate in Center activities as appropriate to their research. Fellows
have the opportunity to interact with Brown faculty affiliated with the
Center, to participate in fellows’ seminars, lectures, and conferences, and
to participate in the planning of working groups and large-scale seminars on
various topics. The Center seeks to provide a stimulating scholarly
environment in which to pursue research, develop new interdisciplinary
connections, and network with others.

The appointment will begin on July 1, 2012, or as soon as possible
thereafter. Receipt of the Ph.D. is expected by the time of appointment.
Fellows receive stipends of $52,000 and $54,080 in their 1st and 2nd years,
respectively, plus standard fellows’ benefits and a $2,000 per year research
budget.

You will have a good honours degree or MA in a relevant subject, such as (or including the study of) Latin, Renaissance History or History of Medicine.  You will also have, or will be about to obtain, a PhD.
 
You will be expected to have an understanding of the nature of academic research and experience in the preparation and editing of substantial pieces of text.  It will be essential that you have the ability to read and translate Renaissance Latin texts. The school offers courses in Greek and Latin language (at different levels:beginners and intermediate) and the possibility of combining two courses(Latin & Greek) at a special rate. The courses will be held in Bologna from 25th June to 13th July 2012 and are open to students (undergraduate and post graduate) and non-students alike. Participants must be aged 18 or over.

The teaching will be focused mainly on Greek and/or Latin language with
additional classes on Classical literature; further classes will touch onmoments of classical history and history of art, supplemented by visits to museums and archaeological sites (in Bologna and Rome).

Conditions for application

   * The scholarships are available for applicants to both M1 (first year of two-year Masters degree) and M2 (second year) programmes.

   * There is a maximum age limit of 26 at the closing date for application(candidates in 2012 must have been born on or after 6th February 1986).

   * Previous qualifications:

- Candidates for admission to the first year of the Masters programme (M1)must hold or be about to obtain a Licence degree (equivalent to 180 EuropeanECTS credits), or a qualification of an equivalent level recognized by the ENS de Lyon.

   * Type of enrolment: Full-time. Students selected for the M2 level willnot be eligible for periods of study or internships abroad during their timeat the ENS de Lyon.

- M1: twelve months, renewable for a further twelve months at M2 level
